Itaewon - Vegan's Guide to Korea

Hellooooo! It's been a while since I've uploaded a VGK.

Back in the beginning of May, my friend Megan and I met up in Itaewon, a social hub for foreigners. Literally.

Itaewon was literally founded by foreigners, and is called the "foreigner district" in Seoul (how many times did I just say, "foreigner"? Hehe).

Because it's such a diverse area, many establishments offer food/products from different countries, and food that caters to every dietary need.

I love this place. Partly because of all the delicious food, and partly because it looks the closest to Portland, Oregon, than I have seen in a while.

We visited Plant Cafe, a cafe known for having the best vegan cakes in town. I had already had lunch, but Megan enjoyed this delicious sweet potato bowl... Filled with (you guessed it!) sweet potatoes, lettuce, Voilife cheese shreds, chickpeas, and figs. We shared a slice of pumpkin spice cake- which I must say, was better than any pumpkin cake I've ever had (both vegan and non vegan). It literally tasted like a mix of pumpkin pie, cinnamon, and cookie butter, all combined into a fluffy, moist cake with light frosting and a lotus cookie to top it all.

We hung out at Plant for a while, enjoying its super-cute interior and friendly customers, before heading out to High Street Market.

High Street Market is a store that basically sells all imported goods. Want a taste of home? Head over to High Street Market. Chances are, they have that special spice or food item from your country there.

Upon entering the dimly lit store, you'll notice the stocked shelves of oatmeal, dates (of all varieties), spices, foreign cookies, crackers, mugs, trinkets, and more. There was even a refrigerated section, stocked with bags of frozen fruit, frozen entrees, tempeh(!!!), and even vegan cheese. Yep, vegan cheese. Some of it looked familiar (helloooo, Quaker's Oatmeal!), and some of the stuff in there were written in languages I don't speak. I picked up a huge box of Khalas dates for only 10,000 won!

I definitely recommend checking this place out when in Itaewon. Super cool & fun to look at all the food from different countries!

Itaewon is filled with so much more than what we were able to cover in a few hours; it has plenty of fancy or themed cafes, some of the best bakeries, vegan-friendly restaurants, and places like High Street Market to help alleviate your homesickness. I will definitely be back soon, can't wait to check out more of this place!
